My Personal Prince Albert Experience
Our Karoo Escape – Unearthing the Charms of Prince Albert
Stepping into Prince Albert in the heart of the Karoo, South Africa, felt like discovering a hidden gem, a place where time slows down, and genuine warmth permeates every interaction. Our recent trip was nothing short of magical, filled with incredible food, breathtaking landscapes, and encounters with truly welcoming locals. It’s a destination we wholeheartedly recommend, and we’re excited to share our experiences and top tips with you.

From the moment we arrived, the spirit of Prince Albert embraced us. Everyone we met was extremely helpful and friendly, a sentiment that truly shaped our stay. We even found that contacting people on the spur of the moment often led to immediate, enthusiastic agreement to meet – a refreshing change of pace. Every single shop we popped into welcomed us with open arms, making our exploration of the town a joy.
Our base for this enchanting journey was the Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse, and we can’t speak highly enough of it. Enjoying dinner in their beautiful garden was an absolute treat. It truly set the tone for the quality of hospitality we experienced.
A Culinary Journey – Indulging in Prince Albert’s Flavours
If there’s one thing that consistently impressed us in Prince Albert, it was the food. The quality of the food was incredible, and a delightful simplicity seemed to be the theme throughout every meal.
Our first port of call for local delights was Gay’s Guernsey Dairy and old barn, where we picked up some fresh, local cheese and crisp bread – a perfect combination. This dairy also offers tours by appointment, which we plan to do on our next visit, to truly appreciate the cheesemaking process.

Beyond our lovely meals at the guesthouse, Prince Albert offers a diverse culinary scene. For those with a taste for something a bit more adventurous, we heard fantastic things about EAT at YellowHouse, an excellent kitchen just a 400m walk from Dennehof, perfect for a slightly more unique palate. Jeremy’s Restaurant and Wine Bar also piqued our interest with its excellent Asian Fusion plates, alongside other dishes, and a deli that’s open during the day.
For traditional South African fare, Karoo Kombuis comes highly recommended, offering a choice of three classic dishes: lamb, bobotie, or chicken pie, or even a combination of the three. If you’re craving a hearty steak, curry, or fresh seafood, Karoo Charcoal Restaurant is the place to go. We also noted The Rude Chef for its excellent home-cooking and broad range of dishes, from ribs to fish & chips and lamb.
For more casual dining, the Prince Albert Cafe offers a relaxed setting for brunch, lunch, snacks, and dinner. We particularly enjoyed the vibe at the Lazy Lizard, a fantastic lunch spot known for its broad selection of dishes and divine cakes and pastries. And for a truly local experience, The Irish Bush Pub is a great watering hole serving pizzas and light meals. Before dinner, or for a relaxed afternoon, the Swartberg Hotel provides a perfect spot for drinks and snacks on its veranda, overlooking the main street.
Olives, Figs, and More
Our trip wouldn’t have been complete without delving into the region’s renowned produce. We embarked on a delightful olive oil tasting journey, visiting O for Olive, Prince Albert Olives, and Kredouw Olive estate. We’re still looking forward to doing a comparative tasting of the three olive oils we brought back, a delightful souvenir of our exploration. However, the absolute highlight for olive oil was just a short drive away in De Rust, on the way to Oudtshoorn. De Rustica Olive farm was rewarded ‘best olive oil in the world in 2023’, and naturally, we had to buy some to enjoy the very best.

Another unforgettable experience was our drive to the Weltevrede Fig Farm. It was a journey of about 25km one way, down dusty country roads, which only added to the sense of adventure. Learning that the fig farm employs up to 100 people in high season and supplies Woolworths exclusively, highlighted the impressive scale of this local industry. The farm offers an absolute fig farm experience, and we highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.
For those keen to learn more about food, the African Relish Cooking School offers a variety of cooking classes, an excellent way to immerse yourself in Karoo cuisine. You can also book an Oasis Farm Experience to pick your own organic fruits, vegetables, or herbs, or even take a walk with Sue Torrance to learn about organic food gardening.

Adventures and Explorations – Beyond the Town
Prince Albert is a gateway to some truly spectacular Karoo adventures. A definite must-experience is the Swartberg Pass, Thomas Bain’s engineering masterpiece and the oldest unaltered pass in South Africa. Whether you explore it from the comfort of your vehicle, or more sportingly on foot or mountain bike, it’s an incredible journey. For mountain biking enthusiasts, Arno at Prince Albert Cycles can assist with bike hire, repairs, or sales, and the team at Dennehof can provide recommended routes.
For hikers, Gordon’s Koppie offers a lovely walk along the length of Prince Albert, and for the more adventurous, a walk up the Swartberg Pass is highly recommended. Just 3km from Dennehof, Bushman Valley Private Nature Reserve also provides fantastic hiking trails and guided walks.
Beyond the immediate vicinity, we discovered other gems worth exploring. A drive over the Swartberg Pass isn’t complete without a lunch stop at the Marbled Wagyu restaurant at De Kombuys Wagyu and wine farm. The Meiringspoort drive is another highly recommended scenic link between the Little and Great Karoo, where you can stop at neat rest stations to admire the rock formations and even take a dip in the rock pool at the Meiringspoort Waterfall on a hot day.

Further afield, the underground wonder of the Cango Caves offers a true South African heritage experience. And for families, the Highgate Ostrich Farm in Oudtshoorn is an ideal stop to learn about these iconic Klein Karoo birds. For wildlife encounters, Swartberg Game Reserve offers an authentic Giraffe Walk, allowing you to seek out wild animals in their natural environment.
We also found biodiversity walks with Sue Milton-Dean in the spectacular Wolwekraal Nature Reserve to be a fascinating way to learn about the geology, botany, and natural and cultural history of the southern Karoo desert.
Shopping and Arts – Unique Finds and Local Craftsmanship
Prince Albert is a treasure trove for unique gifts, art, and local crafts. The town’s vibrant artistic community is showcased at The Prince Albert Gallery, featuring a fantastic selection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, jewellery, and books. We also noted Di Smith Art Studio, open by appointment, and Erika van Zyl Fine Studio & Gallery, located in the town centre, which also offers painting workshops.
For artisanal crafts, Karoo Souk is a must-visit, showcasing artisans using age-old methods, including Sophia Bhooley at Karoo Looms Weavery and Kashief Bhooley the blacksmith at the Striking Metal Forge. They even have a charming coffee shop, Koppie Koffie. We also discovered Artisanal Lifestyle, purveyors of beautiful artisanal clothing, perfumes, footwear, accessories, and gifts.

Cinnamon & Grace caught our eye with their stunning local-crafted jewellery, the Cinnamon Hat range, kitchen and pantry items, pamper products, and linens, including the ‘Vygie Range’ – a beautiful collaboration with local artist Janet Dirksen. The Little Blue Shop also offers a variety of locally sourced products for the home, from blankets to handbags.
For exquisite mohair products, Prince of Africa Mohair and Craft has a great selection of handcrafted blankets, socks, and jerseys, alongside Jeweller Di vd Riet Steyn’s beautiful earrings, necklaces, rings, and pendants. And for truly luxurious gifts incorporating ostrich shells, Avoova offers accessories, tableware, and other stunning objects.
The Watershed is another fantastic spot for retail therapy, offering items for your furry friends from Chommies, stylish mohair from Chommies Mohair, and organic produce from Prince Albert Provisions. Kevin’s Coffee Shop within The Watershed is perfect for a snack and a caffeine kick.
Unwinding and Discovering
Prince Albert isn’t just about adventure; it’s also a place to unwind and enrich your mind. For relaxation, Karoo Yoga with Derryn Searle offers energising summer sunrise classes in the outdoor Kraal, as well as gentle yoga and vinyasa flow in the studio. We also noted the availability of wellness therapy from Ridwaan and Hermon, including holistic massage, reflexology, and reiki, along with one-on-one yoga and pilates sessions. And for pampering, Salon de Belle with Rochelle and Donna offers pedicures, manicures, and facials.
To truly delve into the town’s rich past, the award-winning Fransie Pienaar Museum lays out the full history of this fascinating town. We also heard great things about the historical walking tours and ghost walks led by Prince Albert’s Story Weaver, Ailsa Tudhope, promising an engaging way to learn about the local folklore and history.

Our time in Prince Albert was an absolute delight. The combination of the warm hospitality, incredible food, diverse activities, and unique shopping experiences made it a truly memorable trip. We left with full hearts, inspired minds, and a longing to return to this captivating corner of the Karoo. We hope our experiences and recommendations inspire you to discover the magic of Prince Albert for yourself!
